Oberon, and then different kind of spectacle at Mt Panarama

Fresh temperatures and morning drizzle didn’t stop the town of Oberon coming together to have their moment with the WYD Cross & Icon today.
After gathering at the war memorial in town, students from St Josephs & Oberon High joined with other locals to process the Cross & Icon up the main street to St Ignatious Church where Bishop Patrick joined us in liturgy. As we processed, local retailers joyfully showed their support by cheering us on as we walked past their shop.
It was great to hear students expressing their excitement about finally receiving the Cross & Icon after having prepared so hard for this day!

We then farewelled Oberon and continued our journey to another popular Australian place of Pilgrimage – Mt Panorama. Today however the V8’s paved the way for the WYD Cross; which was carried to the top of the Mountain by students from St Stanislous College, Mary Mackillop College and Assumption Primary.

With Mt Panorama being an internationally recognised car racing destination, and one where many young people gather, it was such a fitting place for the Cross & Icon to visit. Today these special symbols reminded the people of Bathurst that Christ is with always – even as we enjoy the spectacle of motor racing.

The day finished off with Mass celebrated by the Bishop at Bathurst Cathedral.
